When Will I Get My First Period?

Right up there with 'am I normal?' it's a question that's frequently asked by preteen and teenage girls: 'when am I going to get my period?' Unfortunately, the answers for moms aren't as simple as 'yes' and 'soon' respectively.

Here's a quick guide for helping all mothers with daughters tackle that rite of passage. Below you'll find useful topics and practical information which you can use as a loose 'script' with her, or just as a conversation starter.

First periods – a general timeframe

Although most girls get their first period between the ages of 11 and 13, it can start anywhere from about 8, up to the age of 16.

Clues to look out for

You'll find important clues in your our own body as to when you'll get your period. During puberty, when the body becomes sexually mature, some of these changes show your period is on its way (just be aware that these changes may happen in a different order than listed here):

  • Developing breasts – first, getting breast 'buds' (breasts can then take up to three to four years to fully develop). Generally, you'll get your period about two years after your breasts start developing.
  • Growing pubic hair – right after your breasts start to form, you'll start developing pubic hair. It will be soft and thin at first then gradually become coarser. Your period usually arrives around one to two years after this hair starts growing.
  • Discharge – A third sign is that you'll start to experience vaginal discharge that will be either white or yellowish. You may want to start using Always pantyliners to protect your underwear. Your period should start within the next few months after the start of discharge.

Do a little planning

Since every girl only has a general idea of when she'll get her period, it helps to do some planning.

Most preteen and teenage girls use sanitary napkins at least for their first period.Your first period will probably be fairly light so Whisper Ultra Clean Wings would be a good choice of sanitary napkin.

It's a good idea to keep a couple of sanitary napkins with you in your school bag along with some clean underwear. That way you can feel confident you’re prepared.

Relax, you’ll get your first period at some point and you'll be an expert in no time.
