Unplug from life with music

Unplug from life with music

There are never enough hours in the day to get everything done. But it helps to unplug from life and plug into something that recharges the batteries – like music.

Aging parents, young kids, work, household chores – sounds like your life?  There’s no escape from this, but a few hours of me-time with music will help you relax.  Music is a wonderful tool to help you through this down time.

There are many genres of music to choose from.  What moves you?  Remember that relaxation music is quite different from entertainment.  You can pick from Tibetan Chants, Binaural Beats, Reiki Music or Indian/Western Classical to wind you down.

Decide how much time you want to spend relaxing.  It can be 30 minutes or 2 hours.  If you have a specific exercise routine, try to combine it with music which will enhance it.  Better still, throw in some meditation.

Try to pick a time of day to work.  You will be able to handle stress better.

There may be times when you want to just do a quiet meditative exercise.  Experimenting to find out what works is a good way to do it.

How genres help:

Each genre of relaxation music will affect energy and emotional levels differently.  Pick accordingly.

Mantras help to reprogram the brain and help us learn mindfulness.  You have to pay attention while chanting.  We get so caught up with multitasking that we become scattered.  The objective is to be attentive and present as far as possible.

Binaural Beats help promote feelings of wellness and induce relaxation.  This genre of relaxation music is best listened to when one is at home or going to sleep.  Basically, it plays different frequencies and they work on states of wakefulness.

Tibetan Chants include chanting and singing bowls.  Singing bowls produce frequencies which help one to relax deeply.  They are used as meditation aids too.

Reiki Healing Music is really good during healing sessions and also before sleeping.

Classical music runs the gamut – Indian, Western and others.  There are many mood based pieces which can lift the spirit and also help with calming down.

Nature sounds are usually put together in different collections.  Sounds of bird calls, rain, gentle breezes and sounds of waves are deeply relaxing.

Given all the available choices, mix your own relaxation music tracks so that you feel grounded.

One doesn’t have to sit down to do meditative and relaxation work.  Walking meditations are quite popular as is painting.  Some others work on creating mandalas with coloured sand.  Gardening and hobbies work well to de-stress.
