10 Best Things You Need To Know About Breastfeeding

10 Benefits of Breastfeeding & Essential Breastfeeding Tips

Whether you choose to breastfeed your child or not is an individual decision, but before you embark upon this journey, it is always good to know everything there is to know about it.

Congratulations. You’re a mother now. Along with a host of questions, you must be wondering whether to breastfeed your baby or not. There are no right answers, and breastfeeding is a decision that you and you alone can take. Here are a few breastfeeding tips, techniques and interesting information that can help you make a better, more informed decision.

10 Breastfeeding Tips for Moms:

1. Breast milk is healthy.

Breast milk has antibodies that are not found elsewhere. Babies that are breastfed are less likely to suffer from colds, ear infections, diarrhoea and have a much lesser chance of getting allergies.

2. Breastfeeding is healthy for you too.

Breast milk feeding your baby releases prolactin (the mothering hormone) which keeps you happy and oxytocin, which helps your uterus contract. And it helps burn calories as well.

3. No one said it’ll be easy. Learn basic breastfeeding techniques.

Your body is made for breastfeeding, but it needs a little practice. You might want to join a class to learn basic breastfeeding techniques. There could be a little discomfort initially, but keep at it; it will diminish. Do not ignore any shooting pain or redness. That could be a plugged milk duct and it needs to be addressed immediately. If you still face trouble, ask your gynaecologist to show you how to breastfeed your baby properly.

4. Pumping milk is absolutely fine

Perhaps you need to get back to work quickly, or baby drinks milk only from one breast, leaving the other one full. A breast pump can help relieve the pressure and help you store milk when away from baby. Another advantage with pumped milk is that daddy can pull night duty, giving you the much-needed rest and sleep.

 5. You're your baby’s source of food. Eat well.

You need to eat healthy if you want to nourish your baby well. Follow a breastfeeding diet that includes prenatal vitamins, calcium, and at least 300-500 calories. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily.

Avoid smoking and drinking during the entire time that you are breastfeeding.

6. Breastfeeding is convenient.

Breast milk is always available. You don’t need to run to the store or mix formula at odd hours of the night. You also carry lesser bottles and bags of powder when travelling. Once you and baby have a rhythm, you can actually feed your baby anywhere.

7. There will be enough milk.

If you feel you aren’t producing enough milk, do not give up quickly. Keep nursing and your body will respond to the stimulation. At first you will first produce colostrum, baby’s first food. Some babies require this longer and only then will your body produce milk.

8. Learn your baby’s feeding pattern.

Babies want food when they’re hungry. At first their stomachs are small and they eat more frequently. They indicate hunger by smacking their lips, sucking on their hands, squirming and being restless. Don’t go by the clock; go by what your baby is saying. All the time, any time.

9. Listen to your body.

You might worry about not being able to track how many ounces your baby drank. Don’t worry. Nurse on demand and your baby will get enough milk.

10. Don’t give up on breastfeeding.

It will not be easy. There will be joy, frustration, annoyance, anger, exhaustion... but keep going. It does get better and you will soon find yourself and your baby settling into apattern.

Breastfeeding has many benefits for both you and your child. So keep at it and keep in mind the things mentioned above.

Quick Note: While breastfeeding, every woman starts menstruating differently.
