During pregnancy, not only does your body undergo extreme physical and hormonal changes, your skin undergoes certain changes when you are pregnant too. Here are a few of the skin related issues that you should watch out for.

Darker Pigmentation

The most visible change to your skin when you are pregnant is the increased level of pigmentation in the skin. Some people experience melisma- “the mark of pregnancy”- patches of darkened skin which develop on the face due to exposure to ultra violet sunlight. To avoid this, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection.  Moles and freckles generally get darker. They generally return to normal after the delivery though. But do check any asymmetrical changes in a mole’s size or shape with your dermatologist.

Splotchy Shape

During pregnancy, there is an increase in  blood volume in the body and this can sometimes cause blood vessels that are close to skin’s surface to swell  up and burst, causing “spider nevi.” These are red bumps with lines radiating out, resembling a spider’s legs, and they’re common on the face, neck and upper body.

Redness

Most pregnant women’s palms, nail beds, gums and face are surprisingly red.  This too is because of the increased blood volume in your body—and it may be responsible for giving pregnant women that special glow.
