It strengthens your memory too. During sleep research, those people who’d had a good night’s sleep were better at remembering new words that they’d learnt than participants who hadn’t slept well.

Sleeping well will boost your physical health too. How? By boosting your immunity and helping you to fight infection.

It can even help you to metabolise sugar which can help prevent and manage diabetes. “Getting more sleep and improving the quality of sleep may have a positive effect on glucose control in people with and without diabetes.”

Sleep has also been shown to prevent vascular complications such as hypertension, heart disease and strokes.

And, as if all this isn’t enough, sleep actually lowers your risk of an early death. A recent US study showed that people who slept for an average of 7 hours a night had the longest life expectancy. (Don’t worry if you sleep a bit less or a bit more than this.)

Women and sleep

Science shows that women are more likely to experience problems with sleep. This is because of the hormonal changes that women experience throughout their lifetimes. Pregnancy, early motherhood, menopause and certain times of the menstrual cycle can all upset sleep patterns.
