As a Mum, you often are on a packed schedule, without time for a proper breakfast or lunch, and hunger pangs can make you reach for the nearest packet of crisps or cookies, despite your best efforts to eat healthily. But don’t despair, with a bit of planning and the right nutritional guidelines, every bout of hunger could be an opportunity to nourish your system and fuel a fast-burning metabolism.

Healthy snacking is an essential part of any balanced diet, provided you snack right. Here’s how:
• Ready-to-eat fresh veggies such as baby carrots, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes and avocado slices with hummus or tsatsiki dip
• Non-fat Greek yoghurt with granola, nuts or fruit, or half a cup of non-fat plain yoghurt drizzled with a teaspoon of honey or unsalted sunflower seeds
• Low-fat or fat-free cheese sticks or cottage cheese with fresh fruit
• Roll up protein-packed lean meats such as chicken and turkey, or tinned tuna with cheese or avocado
• Baked sweet potato sprinkled with some cinnamon
• Hardboiled egg and six whole grain crackers
• Rainbow wraps (sandwich alternative) – spread hummus on a wholewheat tortilla and fill with chopped tomato, shredded carrots, lettuce, avocado, cucumbers and shredded red cabbage.
• Grated low-fat cheddar cheese and corn tortilla, folded in half and microwaved for 20 seconds
• Air-popped popcorn with a little added sea salt and olive oil
• A handful of unsalted almonds
• Apples – baked with a sprinkle of cinnamon or apple slices with a thin layer of unsalted peanut butter on each slice
• Frozen banana pops – slice several peeled bananas in half and insert Popsicle sticks; then coat each half with some low-fat plain yoghurt before freezing
• Grapes – a cupful, either fresh or frozen
• Mango and pineapple – satisfy your sweet tooth by freezing ¾ cup of mango or pineapple cubes
• Blueberries (packed with fibre, antioxidants and calcium) – blend ? cup of non-fat yoghurt with ? cup of frozen blueberries and ice for a healthy berry smoothie.
