Stress Management Tips@ Reward Me

Stop stress in its track

Having trouble choosing a stress-busting fitness regime that’s flexible enough to fit in with your busy schedule?

Here are three fitness disciplines, which are guaranteed to relieve stress, improve fitness and create an overall sense of improved wellbeing.

Pilates

Yoga

Tai chi

What is it?
Devised by Joseph Pilates, this form of exercise builds core strength while increasing flexibility and creating long, supple muscles. The physical movements are designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. Dating back more than 5000 years, Yoga is an Indian practice with a holistic approach that addresses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The general aim is to aid flexibility, relaxation and breathing. Sometimes called a ‘soft‘ martial art, Tai chi is a series of slow, flowing body movements that emphasise concentration, relaxation and the circulation of energy throughout the whole body.
What are the health benefits?
It increases lung capacity, circulation, strength and flexibility, helps with coordination and improves posture, balance and core strength. It slims the muscles, making them more compact. It is great for stress relief as it involves a series of both moving and stationary poses, combined with deep breathing. It aids in better sleep, better eating habits, toning of the muscles and a calmer and clearer mind. It tones the muscles without straining them and also creates a form of internal massage, improves balance, coordination and flexibility, and reduces stress.
What do I need?
Although Joseph Pilates designed equipment specific to the exercises he devised, you don’t need any equipment to reap the benefits. A Yoga mat is recommended. A little bit of quiet time for yourself and a peaceful environment is ideal. No special equipment is needed.
How long before I can feel results?
Although not a quick-fix exercise programme, you should be able to feel the benefits immediately. The positive effects can be felt after your first class. Results are immediate. Once you are relaxed and have forgotten about your hectic schedule, your shoulders will relax and tension will dissipate from your body.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing. Exercise barefoot or just wear socks. Remove your jewellery, watch and glasses as they may interfere with the workout. Wear comfortable, breathable clothes that will allow you ease of movement. Yoga is usually practised barefoot. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Tai chi is normally practised barefoot or in light, thin-soled footwear.
Can anyone do it?
Pilates is suitable for just about everyone – from couch potatoes to fitness buffs. Anyone can do yoga. However, bear in mind that there are various types of Yoga. Tai chi can benefit the fittest athletes as much as it can benefit the elderly or the disabled.
Should I start with a home programme or take a class?
Pilates is best taught on a one-to-one basis, classes should be restricted to about eight people. Work out at home after you have some experience. Initially classes are better. Once you’ve learnt the basics, you can practise on your own. Start off by attending classes to make sure that you have the basics right. Supplement your workout by practising at home.
How often should I work out?
Once or twice a week. Aim to work out six days a week for about 15 minutes or more. At least twice a week, and practise at home whenever possible.
