How Much Exercise Is Just Enough?

When you don’t have the time for a serious gym regime, what should you do to top up your fitness?

Even gentle exercise, slotted naturally into your everyday routines, can make a huge difference to your health and overall energy levels. Aim to get some sort of exercise every day, or at the very least five times a week.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are new to exercise you should consult your GP before starting a new exercise programme.

Walking
Build more walking into your daily commute or the school run, go for a stroll at lunchtime, and at the weekend why not take the family out to the countryside with a picnic in a rucksack?

Gardening
Combining a bit of digging and hoeing with some lifting and carrying, bending and stretching, you’ll be toning arms and legs and sculpting a flat stomach in no time. Again, it’s something the whole family can enjoy, and if you sign up for an allotment you’ll have the added benefits of fresh homegrown food.

Dancing
If you really want to express yourself, why not try dancing yourself fitter? You don’t have to put on lycra and join a class if that’s not your cup of tea – just dig out your favourite music, whack up the volume and shake your stuff for half an hour. You’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel afterwards, and younger children will love to join in.

Savvy tip
Make sure you are wearing the right shoes when you begin to increase your exercise habits, as this can affect how well your joints and the rest of your body is supported.

Pass it on – Interval training
As long as you’ve already built up some moderate fitness, there’s nothing to stop you from packing a serious workout into a tiny niche within a busy day, and interval training is great for this.

  • Alternate short, flat-out sections with recovery periods where you work gently.
  • Add short runs into a walk, or short sprints into a run.
  • It works just as well if you’re swimming, too.
  • The contrast between the fast and slow sections makes your body work extra hard and gets you fitter quicker.
