Help Avoid Summer Germs

Help Avoid Summer Germs

Check out these tips and ideas for staying away from common summer germs.

Summer brings its own set of germs and pitfalls, but with some simple precautions, they don’t have to slow down the fun. Learn proper hand washing techniques, pool safety tips and more warm weather safety tips.

Tips to have a Germ Free Summer:

Proper Hand Washing

Use this technique to help cut down on spreading germs.

  1.  Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
  2. Rub hands together until the soap lathers, and then scrub the backs of hands, between fingers and under nails.
  3. Continue lathering hands for at least 20 seconds. Rinse.
  4. Dry hands using a clean towel, or air dry.

Pool Safety

Keep skin dry and avoid contact with damp surfaces to prevent fungal infections.

  • Don’t stay in wet bathing suits or clothing longer than necessary.
  • Shower before and after swimming in a public pool.
  • Always wear footwear in public restrooms and locker rooms.
  • Avoid sitting on benches in public locker rooms.
  • Do not share towels.

Food Safety

Summer is the time for outdoor dining, but with the hot temperatures, food safety is crucial.

  • Always wash hands before handling food.
  • Keep cold food below 40 F and hot foods above 140 F.
  • Keep coolers out of the sun and avoid opening the lid frequently. Pack beverages in one cooler and perishables in another to avoid this pitfall.
  • Avoid mayonnaise-based salads by using recipes that use vinegar and oil dressings.

Prevent Bug Bites

Besides the itching, insect bites can spread diseases. Use our tips to help avoid them.

  • Contact your doctor to discuss the best insect repellents for your family.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants if possible when playing or hiking through the woods or tall grasses.
  • Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, pool covers, pet water dishes and birdbaths on a regular basis.

Cuts and Scrapes

Treat minor injuries properly so they don’t turn into bigger problems later.

  • Always keep a first aid kit handy in your car or bag. (Check out our summer safety kit, too!)
  • To stop minor bleeding, apply gentle pressure for at least five minutes with a clean cloth or bandage.
  • Rinse cuts thoroughly with clean water or saline solution to remove dirt and debris.*
  • Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment, and cover with a clean dressing.

*Tip: Cleaning cuts with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol may increase scarring.

Pet Health

Follow these precautions to help keep pets happy and pest free this summer.

  • Make sure vaccinations are up to date.
  • Check pets every day for fleas and ticks. Ask your veterinarian for an effective preventive treatment to keep these parasites at bay.
  • Provide your pet with plenty of fresh, clean water. Change the water and clean food bowls every day.
