Stressful situations can be overpowering and can occur even if you are super organised at work. Here’s how you can control the situation before it starts to control you.


Enough has been said and written about stress busting techniques that keep you calm and focussed. If you’re aware of your reactions during the situation, these relatively simple activities can actually help put you back in the driver’s seat. 


7 easy stress busters to keep your sanity intact

Go for a walk: Is work getting unbelievably crazy? When you reach that point when things are spiralling out of control, or your mind gets clogged, just drop everything and go for a walk, even if it’s in the parking lot. If you feel like this at home, get away. Drive to a park or go to the gym.  You will not only get some down time but also some exercise – 2 for the price of 1.

Talk to a friend: There is always that one person who manages to cheer you up even on your worst day.  Just listening to their voice makes you feel calm, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Just venting, listening or talking about other lighter topics can make you smile and forget why you were so stressed.  Return the favour sometime – what are friends for?

Write down your feelings: This is another great stress buster.  There are times when you won’t feel like talking to anyone. Venting in a journal or a diary can help you deal with complex emotions. The best thing is that you don’t have to worry about what other people think or how they feel. Writing is cathartic and by the time you’ve finished, you could have even worked out the problem and your feelings. Just make sure your journal is locked away or your boss won’t be too happy.

Play games: Not corporate ones, but actual fun ones. Get away from a situation and pick up a game on your laptop or phone, but keep it simple.  Kid’s games like snakes and ladders, Twister, Uno and Candy land are light and fun.  Laughter is a great way to de-stress.

Work it out: If you are really fed up and frustrated, take it out on your workout. Nothing works better.  Run on the treadmill, go for a spin cycling class or jump rope.  Take the focus off what is frustrating you and plug it into the exercise. Visualise the stress leaving your body and that you are relaxed.

Planning fun activities:  Been planning to take a trip somewhere and have had no time?  Now’s the time to plan that. Ask a friend to join you. Spending time doing meaningful activities and connect with friends.

Me time: Some people enjoy a soaking in a warm bath. Others love getting a massage.  If you have a hobby, take a few hours off and indulge.  You owe it to yourself.
