6 Ways to Eat Right This Party Season

Worried about piling on the pounds this Christmas and New Year? Don’t be. End of year binging does not mean it’s the end of the world.

If you find yourself craving specific foods during cold weather, you’re not alone. With Christmas and New Year right around the corner and parties galore, winter’s that time of year when most of us put on weight.  That’s also because the body requires more calories to stay warm.  With a few changes in your eating habits, a winter diet for weight loss, and some exercise, shedding those pounds can become easy.

Choose The Right Food Groups

#1 More colour, less white:  Desserts, paneer, cream laden dishes and pastas with cheese are avoidable.  But if your will power decides to ignore you, eat smaller portions to keep your blood sugar from spiking.  Switch to whole grains like oats, millets and brown rice instead.

#2 Bottoms up:  How many of us remember to drink enough water in the winter?  The trick is to drink up even if you’re not thirsty.  Herbal teas with ginger and cinnamon are great to warm up the body.  Drink lots of water, especially if you’ve had alcohol the previous day.  Hot chocolate is also a delicious option provided you keep the sugar out of it.

#3 Protein: Grilled chicken and fish are ideal on a cold day.  Proteins have a low glycaemic index.  Vegetarians can load up on lentils and beans in various forms – dal, soups, you name it.

#4 Fruits and Veggies: Make sure to pick a rainbow of veggies and fruits from seasonal fare.  Purple, orange and red – choose from all of these to get anti-oxidants.  Leafy veggies and fruit along with porridge are very satisfying on cold days.

#5 Warmth in a cup:  Soups are a great way to eat veggies you are not that crazy about.  This is a great weight loss tool as it helps with cutting down on portions and calories.

#6 Nuts and snacks:  Walnuts, almonds and other nuts are great for your diet for weight loss.  Also include seeds of all kinds, in salads or as is.

#7 Exercise with fun: Keeping in sync with your New Year resolutions, winter is a great time of the year to try something new.  Check out that new dance studio. Try Salsa or Bollywood dancing – this could come handy at the Christmas or New Year party.   Group classes are fun and help with staying motivated.  Check out Mixed Martial Arts or even plain running – whatever keeps you active to lose that weight easily.
