The cuticle is the hair's protective layer. It's the most resilient layer of your hair, shielding the more sensitive inner layers of the hair shaft. Though colorless, the cuticle determines how much shine and gloss your hair has, depending on how well it absorbs light. The healthier the cuticles, the nicer-looking the hair. There tend to be thicker cuticles on beard hairs, making them very coarse. So before you shave, you should hydrate your facial hair with warm water and shaving gel to soften the cuticles.
