Interior décor – trying new colours

It might be easy for the experts, but where do you start when you want to try a new style in your home? Colours are one of the easiest ways to change the mood of a room, but remember you don’t have to commit to a major overhaul all in one go.

First, take a look at what you’ve got. Look at your core pieces with fresh eyes and decide if you like their colour. Wooden furniture can be stripped or painted, while textile colours can be lifted or toned down simply by mixing them with others. An orange sofa, for instance, will look bright and funky in a white room full of zingy citrus accessories, but it can also blend into a mellow autumnal palette of dark red, plum and cream.

Wall wisdom
Be wary of making a big, bold statement that the rest of the room can’t live up to. Just as the right wall colour can make a room work, the wrong one will mean that nothing else ever looks quite right. It’s better to give walls a subtle nudge in the right direction – swapping magnolia for a classy dove-grey shade for instance – and saving bolder colours for rugs, cushions and throws. Or splash out on some trendy wallpaper for a feature wall or chimney breast.

Dare to mix not match

A neutral scheme can really work here as the base for your quirkier pieces – try grouping a few vintage items together by colour, to up their impact and co-ordinate a room without making it look like a hotel lobby. Not only is this mix-and-match look right on trend, it’s cheap too!

Savvy tip
There are some things – carpet, sofas and armchairs, large storage items like shelving or sideboards – that are too expensive to replace regularly so refresh your home’s look by moving them to different rooms instead.
