Delft Dream

Decorate your bedroom with modern Delft detail. Here are two projects that will set you in the right direction.

Dress on bed

Using a digital photo and transfer technique, give your duvet cover a touch of Delft.

You will need:

  • white duvet cover
  • high-resolution digital photo
  • transfer paper for dark fabric
  • wax paper (sometimes included with the product)
  • scissors

To make:

  1. Take your photo and enlarge it then divide it into A4-sized sections with a photo editing program. NB: If you do not have an editing program, you can have it done for you at a photocopy shop that offers this service.
  2. Print out the different parts of the photo using an inkjet printer (not a laser printer) onto the transfer paper and leave to stand for five minutes so the ink can dry. Cut the photos out along the outline of the dress. TIP: Use transfer paper for dark fabric, as it gives a deeper colour.
  3. Place the duvet cover on a hard surface for ironing and make sure there are no creases in the fabric. Set your iron to the hottest temperature with the steam function switched off.
  4. Remove the back layer from the first photo. Place the printed part photo-side upwards in position on the duvet cover. Cover it with the wax paper.
  5. Iron the photo onto the duvet cover. Don’ t press too hard on the iron. Work in a circular movement and iron all over, also in the corners and at the edges. It should take about four minutes per A4 photo.
  6. Remove the wax paper and repeat until all the sections are complete.

Round off your gorgeous new room with more blue and white elements. Look for pretty cushions, porcelain objects or simply a few vintage bottles.

Chest of drawers with blue-and-white design

This old chest of drawers was made over to match the dé cor of the room. It provides a beautiful focus point.

You will need:

  • paper with Delft designs
  • new drawer knobs (optional)
  • white enamel or PVA paint
  • Mod Podge
  • craft varnish
  • paint rollers and brushes
  • sharp craft knife

To make:

  1. Remove the drawers and unscrew the knobs. If you are replacing them with new ones and the holes will differ, you must now drill the new holes or fill in the old ones, as necessary.
  2. Paint the whole chest and the drawers white, using enamel paint for a glossy finish. Paint another coat once the first coat is completely dry and leave to dry again.
  3. Now start the decoupage – unless you find a paper that fits perfectly over the drawers. You can also use scrapbooking paper or even serviettes. Cut a paper panel for each drawer – mark the back if you are worried you may mix them up.
  4. Place the first drawer on its back, paint a layer of Mod Podge over the front and place the paper panel in position. Paint more Mod Podge over the top and rub to smooth. Seal with a final layer.
  5. Decoupage the other drawers in the same way. Leave to dry completely then trim the edges with your craft knife, to neaten.
  6. Seal your work with varnish and leave to dry.
  7. Screw in the knobs and put the drawers back in position.

GOOD IDEA - Use the same technique to update a melamine cupboard.
