All of us are advised to include heaps of veggies in our diet to cut calories and lose weight. Often, dressings are a major source of fat calories. Yogurt can be used as a base instead of oil or mayonnaise to make some really amazing dressings.

Summer is a good time of year to lose weight as you don’t feel too hungry.  Fresh produce on the market also makes it easy to eat a varied and low calorie diet.  Of course, salad dressings add flavour and kick.  Yogurt makes a great substitute as a base for dressings, without giving up on flavour.

Here are 5 easy to make recipes with easily available ingredients.

Bonus: Most of these dressings can also double up as dips and be served with crudités as a healthy starter at parties. 

Tip:  Don’t be afraid to use yogurt dressings for fruit salads.  Tweak the honey mustard or lemon dressing a bit and drizzle over.

Goodness Green: use it as a dressing or a dip

1 cup chopped avocado (about 1 avocado)
3 or 4 anchovy fillets or 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons anchovy paste
2 small garlic cloves, chopped
2 scallions, chopped
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup hung curd
1/4 cup firmly packed basil, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped tarragon leaves
Extra virgin olive oil, for making dressing, optional

  1. Add the avocado, anchovies, garlic, scallions, white wine vinegar, lemon juice and yogurt to a food processor or blender; process until relatively smooth.  Add the basil, parsley, and tarragon; process until smooth.  If it is too thick, thin it out with a bit of olive oil.
  2. Serve with crudités as a dip or thin out with olive oil to make a salad dressing.
  3. For dressing, add olive oil 1/4 cup at a time, processing constantly until the desired consistency is reached.  Toss with salad greens.

Sweet and Spicy: Yogurt and Honey Mustard Dressing

1 cup plain fat free or low fat yogurt

3 tbsp. honey mustard

2 tsp. honey

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

  1. Put all the ingredients in a shallow bowl.  Stir till the ingredients are well blended.
  2. Spoon into a clean container until it is ready to be served.  If it becomes too thick, add a bit of water and stir to thin out.  Serve as a dip with fresh veggies.

Bursting With Flavour: Buttermilk Herb Dressing

2 tbsp. Buttermilk

1 tbsp. + 1 tsp. lemon juice

Zest from ¼ lemon

1 ½ tsp. chopped flat leaf parsley

½ tsp. chopped fresh tarragon

1 ½ tsp. of chopped fresh chives

2 tbsp. virgin olive oil

Sea salt and freshly ground pepper

  1. In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk, lemon zest, lemon juice, parsley, tarragon and chives together.
  2. Slowly drizzle olive oil and keep whisking till well blended.  Season with salt and pepper.

Tangy Cool: Dill Yogurt Dressing

½ cup plain yogurt

½ cup chopped dill

Juice from ½ a lemon

1 tbsp. honey

Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Whisk yogurt, dill, lemon juice and honey in a shallow bowl till well blended.
  2. Drizzle over salad greens just before serving.

Refreshing and Crisp: Lemon Yogurt Dressing

½ cup plain, low fat yogurt

2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

¼ tsp. lemon zest

2 tbsp. olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Whisk yogurt, lemon juice, lemon zest and olive oil in a bowl.
  2. Season dressing with salt and pepper just before serving.
