Helpful Kitchen Tips: It’s knife or never

Of all the implements used every day in the kitchen, knives are the most basic yet essential items. There are many brands in the market and investing in a set of quality knives is important to the quality of your chopping.

You don’t have to be a professional chef to appreciate having a good knife to work with.  But a great knife saves time by cutting better and faster and also slices the fruits and veggies well.  A few things to consider when choosing your knife are the weight and quality of the blade.  Don’t buy a set unless you know what function each one would serve.  Use your money wisely and buy a few, good quality ones instead.

Serrated/Bread Knife:

This knife might look wicked with all the teeth, but is one of the most useful tools to have.  Of course, its main job is to slice bread evenly without too many crumbs and the bread losing shape.  Serrated knives are great for cutting through juicy vegetables like tomatoes.  Use this knife to cut through fruits like peaches and nectarines.  How about cutting through chocolate without making a mess? Serrated knives come in handy when one has to cut watermelons, honeydew melons or canteloupes.

Other Knives to collect:

Other knives to add to your collection will depend on your cooking needs and lifestyle.  It would be good to invest in the following ones too.

  • All purpose knife (5 inches) – can be used for all kinds of chopping.  It is a good first choice.
