To make

  1. Enlarge the pattern grid to size on metric dressmaking graph paper. One square on the grid represents 1 x 1cm. Cut out the dress panels from the cotton print fabric and transfer all the pattern markings. Cut three 25mm wide bias strips from the contrasting fabric, one 45cm long and two 32cm long. Cut a 14 x 14cm square from the contrasting fabric and iron the interfacing to the back of the square. Iron the interfacing on to the facing sections of the back panels and over-lock the edges.
  2. Draw the outline of the heart motif on the front of the fabric square. Pin the square in position on the front panel of the dress. Sew a line of straight stitches on the marked outline. Next, cut the excess fabric away, right next to the line of stitches. Set your sewing machine on a zigzag stitch with a short stitch length so it forms a narrow satin stitch and sew around the motif, making sure the stitching covers the raw edge.
  3. Prepare the bias binding by pressing the two edges of the bias strips to the back, so they meet at the centre.
  4. Sew, over-lock and press the shoulder seams. Press the facing sections on the back panels to the wrong side and pin at the neckline. Open one edge of the 45cm long bias binding and pin to the neckline, folding 1,5cm of both ends over to the wrong side. Sew along the fold line of the bias binding. Fold the binding to the wrong side and pin. Sew a row of top-stitching on the front of the binding, catching the fold at the back.
  5. Bind the armholes in the same way but do not fold the ends over to the wrong sides. Sew, over-lock and press the side seams. Sew a small bar tack at the top of the seam to keep the end of the binding down.
  6. Over-lock the bottom edge of the dress and fold a 1.5cm-wide hem. Top-stitch the hem in place.
  7. Mark and sew the buttonholes as given on the pattern and attach the buttons.
