Fabric Photo Printing with an Ink Jet Printer @ Reward Me

How to transfer photos to fabric

It’s so easy with an ink-jet printer. Just use the right sort of transfer paper and follow one of these two methods, depending on the colour of your fabric.

Print your photo on ordinary paper first so that you can make certain of the size.

Light fabric

You need

  • Digital pictures
  • Transfer paper suitable for light fabric
  • Scissors

Step 1 - Choose your photo and flip it over on your computer so it is a mirror image of the original. Print on transfer paper for light fabric using an ink-jet printer (not a laser printer). Cut it out with a 5mm border around it.

Step 2 - Set your iron to the highest setting and turn off the steam function. Work on a flat, hard surface and iron the fabric so it is smooth.

Step 3 - Now place the transfer paper photo side down on the fabric. Iron the photo onto the fabric by holding the iron in one place for a few seconds. This should take about one-and-a-half to two minutes per A4 sheet.

Step 4 - Remove the layer at the back. For a matte finish, do this while the photo is still warm. For a glossy finish, wait until the photo has cooled completely. Begin at one corner and pull off the layer with a flowing motion.

Tip Remember to iron into the corners. The paper will change colour and start to smell – this is normal.

Dark fabric

You need

  • Digital pictures
  • Transfer paper suitable for dark fabric
  • Greaseproof paper (sometimes included with the transfer paper)

Step 1 - Print the photo using an ink-jet printer (not a laser printer) onto transfer paper for dark fabric and leave to stand for five minutes so that the ink can dry. Cut out the photo, without leaving a border.

Step 2 - Pull the layer on which the photo is printed away from the back.

Step 3 - Set your iron on the highest setting and make sure that the steam function is off. Work on a flat, hard surface and iron the fabric so it is smooth. Place the layer with the photo on the fabric with the photo facing you. Cover with greaseproof paper.

Step 4 - Iron the photo onto the fabric, but don’t press the iron down too hard. Work in a circular motion allowing the heat to disperse evenly, allow about four minutes per A4 photo. Remember the sides and corners.

Step 5 - Remove the greaseproof paper, but don’t discard it as you can reuse it.
