Recycle Jeans: Get Innovative with Denims @ Reward Me

Get creative with denim

You can make the cutest of things from a pencil case to a tablecloth, using a pair of old denim jeans.

Denim bag

From a too small (or too big) pair of denims you can make a nice grocery bag.

How:
Measure the side seam from the belt and cut off at 40cm. Loosen the inside-leg seams and cut the extra material off at the cross seams so that it makes a straight line. Stitch seams up again. Stitch the bottom closed. Use the left-over denim to make a band about 5cm wide and as long as you wish. Join where necessary to get the length you need. Stitch tightly to the body band.

Lay the table with denim

Use left-over material from your cut up jeans and make flowers and leaves, which you can stitch to a tablecloth.

How:
Cut a simple daisy pattern from the denim and place criss-cross over each other to create a thick floral pattern. Stitch in the centre with a little button. Cut out leaves from different coloured denim and stitch “veins” onto some of them. Tear or cut a strip of material of about 20cm long and 4cm wide for the roses. Wrap the strip loosely around 2 fingers to create roses. Stitch the flowers onto an existing tablecloth.

Tip Ensure you stitch the flowers to the tablecloth securely, so that they can survive the washing process. Steam the flowers when you iron the tablecloth.

Let the drainpipes dance

Use the legs from an old pair of denim drainpipes to make containers for paint brushes, pencils, or kitchen and bathroom utensils.

How:
Use a large can or flower pot and slip the denim over. If the drainpipe is too big, stitch one seam until it fits. Pull the bottom of the can or pot down onto the left-over material and cut out with seam space. Stitch it to the bottom of the drainpipe. Cut the double-stitched seam on the left-over material loose from both sides, and make two handles. Cut the belt loops loose and stitch together as decoration.

Where is my pencil case?

Use the front of your denims to make a pencil case.

How:
Loosen the zip. Keep the side seam and cut the denim to a size of 25 x 15cm. Stitch the bottom side and left-over side seam closed. Cut thick corners off. Stitch a zip to the top.
