Clothing Choices for Unpredictable Weather

When the weather's being unpredictable, getting dressed in the mornings can be a gamble. So how do we stay relatively warm and cool, beach ready, wind resistant and rainproof all at the same time?

Tips To Weather Proof Your Entire Family

#1 Check your wardrobe

Start by looking through your wardrobe. Its not a bad idea to do a half-yearly check to make sure everyone in your household has everything they need for every possible weather condition. Make sure the clothes fit comfortably, are clean and in good condition, and replace, fix or wash accordingly.

If you can, buy in bulk and keep spares. Kids will be kids and will inevitably lose a sock or rip a sweater every once in a while.

#2 Keep all-weather wear handy in the car
Fill a cardboard box or holdall with a range of clothing items for every weather condition and leave it in the boot of the car. Consider throwing in:

  • Gumboots
  • Jacket
  • Jumper
  • Warm socks
  • Gloves
  • Woolly hat
  • Sun hat
  • Bathers
  • Rashies

You never know when you might need them, and it'd be a shame to have to rethink your schedule or your children's playtime just because of a weather change. Leave a blanket, umbrella and sunscreen in the car as well, in case of emergency fluctuating weather.

#3 Layering in style
When you haven't a clue what to expect of the weather, err on the side of caution and layer your clothing. Two or three layers should keep you and your little ones insulated against the cold, and they can be easily taken off when the weather warms up.

Consider layering with singlets, t-shirts and jersey tops. Make a feature of your layering by coordinating colours, lengths and different necklines. Tights are also perfect for wearing under trousers and dresses, and leggings with skirts look very cute on little girls.

#4 Accessories
Pashminas and scarves look great, and are the perfect accessory for unpredictable weather.
They can also offer protection from the sun, be folded and stored easily and worn in a variety of ways. When the weather turns cold outside, and the office suddenly feels like a fridge, a pashmina comes very much in handy to keep you warm while looking effortlessly chic.

You won't be able to wear umbrellas, but you can bet having one in your handbag all the time will save you from countless occasions of either scorching sunshine or sudden showers. Get the kids their own so everyone gets shelter from the sun or rain.

Take unpredictable weather in your stride by being ready for anything. A little bit of planning now could save you from sunburn or catching a cold tomorrow.
