Around the holidays, it's always so wonderful to be able to spend time with family that we don't see as often as we would like. And every year, it seems we vow to get together more frequently, or even just to slow down and spend more quality time with the people that live in our own homes. But of course, each year our lives seem to get busier and busier and those vows quickly fall to the wayside. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are three easy tips to keep your family close all year long:

Eat dinner together. Between work and everyone’s after-school activities and hobbies, sitting down together for family dinner every night can prove a huge challenge. But, it is so worth it when you actually get to talk to your family in person for 20 minutes each day. You will learn so much about each individual because sitting down at the table together offers a perfect opportunity to ask each other questions and to find out what’s really going on in each other’s lives. Even if it means you don’t get to eat dinner until 8 p.m., give it a try. You can always have a hearty snack earlier in the evening to tide you over, but you can’t ever redo these precious evenings.

Tip: Invite some of your extended family to join you one day a week or even a couple times a month, so that everyone can stay connected throughout the year.

Be active together. I love the idea of family workouts and challenges. A few months ago, my husband and I started going to the gym together and it is wonderful. We don’t always work out together, but we always arrive and leave together and discuss our workouts before and after. We leave our son in the gym’s playroom and explain to him that mommy and daddy are going to exercise so that we can be around with him for a long time. Not only is it giving us individually a chance to blow off steam, but we are bonding over a common interest and teaching our toddler a lesson about making fitness a priority.

Tip: Sign up for a race, walk or other charity fitness event and invite other family members to join your team, train and participate with you. It’s a great opportunity to spend some time together on a regular basis.

Use technology. Whether you just need to touch bases with your kids throughout the day or you want to keep in touch with family in different parts of the country or even the world, social media and video calls are awesome tools to do so. PCs, laptops, tablets and smart phones all feature apps and services that will help you access your family members at the touch of a button, and while it’s not the same as spending time in person, it can bridge the gap between regular contact and no contact, and is often more convenient and affordable than regular phone calls.

Tip: Set regular dates with extended family when your whole brood will be around to take part in the chat for even more family bonding.
