Make 2014 amazing with these hot new trends

We round up some of the hottest new trends for you to usher in 2014 with style!

Most of us see the start of a new year as the perfect opportunity to let bygones be bygones and start on a clean slate. It can be as big of a deal with life-changing resolutions, or something as small as stepping into the new year with a new look. We round up some of the hottest new trends for you to usher in 2014 with style!

1. Clothes

Forgot the crop tops of the '90s - instead of baring your entire midriff, show only a silver of your abdomen. This means you should stick with high-waist bottoms to offset the potential flesh parade that comes with cropped tops. Keen on crop tops but not too sure about the length? You can still be fashionable and trendy by layering them over plain dresses or tank tops. If you are still not convinced with this trend, try others such as white wide-legged pants or clothes with solid graphic prints. Whatever the trend, think simple and classy!

2. Hair that isn’t too ‘done’

Big bouffant hair held up with a can of hairspray is no longer relevant in this millennium – hair is textured with natural-looking waves, is soft and touchable. Go ahead and pledge to spend more than 10 minutes on your hair a day when you get ready – we promise a beautiful head of hair will do wonders for your self-esteem! Big braids are also back in vogue, but it’s more romantic Rapunzel then Dutch milkmaid. Apply a volumizing mousse to damp hair and after blow-drying, gather your long hair on one side and braid it all the way to the end. Then, pick at your braid at random spots and fluff it up until you’re happy with it, and hold the style with a light mist of hairspray.

To get healthy hair that’s ready to take on any hairstyle, try the Daily Intensive Conditioner and All Day Smooth Miracle Water in the Head & Shoulders’ Smooth and Silky range. The Daily Intensive Conditioner helps to keep your hair moisture balance in check so that it stays smooth and manageable in any weather. The All Day Smooth Miracle Water is a non-sticky liquid with an ultra-light finish that helps to maintain the perfect moisture level for your hair, and is great for women on-the-go thanks to its small size and fits easily in any purse!

3. Makeup

When it comes to makeup, the focus is either on the eyes or the lips - never both at the same time. Deep, berry colours are all the rage and are easier to pull off then you think. Smudge a dark, matte colour onto your lips with your finger, effectively creating a stain that allows your natural lip colour to show through. Focus most of the colour in the middle of your lips, and slowly blend it to the outer corners of your mouth. If you like a little bit of shine, dab on some lip gloss.

4. Loud accessories

2014 is not the year for minimal accessories – get loud and exaggerated! Think big chunky necklaces, bracelets and rings. You could also try layering multiple pieces of jewellery to get that ‘chunky’ effect. Just keep this in mind when you go jewellery shopping – the bigger, the better!

5. Fitness trends

Gone are the days when all a person did to exercise was to jog and swim – now, the trend is in high-level interval intensity workouts like CrossFit or boxing. According to ACE Fitness, it increases your insulin sensitivity and reduces your abdominal fat. The best part is that you don’t have to slough away hours at the gym every week. High-intensity intervals are usually done in bursts of 30 seconds to three minutes, alternating with rest periods of about the same length of time. The total exercise session is usually around 20-30 mins. But be warned, high-intensity workouts are not for the faint of heart and is not recommended for those with cardiovascular problems. However, if your physician gives you the green light, go for it!

6. Sneakers

Yes, high heels are always the sexier option and do make your legs look longer, but is it really worth suffering serious foot injuries? Thankfully, fashion folk are pairing their sneakers with everything from suits to dresses, and it seems like they are here to stay. The best part is that this look combines both form and function, and is infinitely more practical and comfortable than a sky-high stiletto. If you still want a bit of height, you can always pick a sneaker with a wedge like Miranda Kerr (above).
