Find the Ideal Skin Care Routine for Your Skin Type

You might be tempted to try that product your best friend swears by, but is her skin type the same as yours? Here’s what you should know about caring for your unique skin.

Looking after your skin and ensuring it looks healthy and glowing is often a complicated business. With so many products on the market aimed at a baffling array of skin types, it can be difficult to know if you’re doing the right thing for your skin and protecting it against premature ageing in the future, or overdoing it with all the wrong potions and lotions. Luckily, help is at hand – take the skin test below and follow our no-nonsense guide...

What is my skin type?

First, gently wash your face and remove your make-up. Then wait an hour, avoiding the urge to touch your face. By this point, your skin will be in its most natural state. Take some clean tissues and gently blot your skin on the nose, forehead, chin and cheeks – each time checking to see how much oil is present.

If you have oil in several or all of these areas, you have oily skin. If you only found oil on your ‘T-zone’ (the nose and forehead), you have combination skin. If the opposite happened, and you discovered your skin is flaking or looks tight, you have dry skin. And if you had none of the above, then you are in the lucky minority of having normal skin.

If you can’t take off your makeup right this minute, try our quiz (link to ‘5 Simple Questions To Identify Your Skin Type’ [REFNO59]) for more suggestions on learning what type of skin you have.

Once you know your type, here’s how to look after it:

You can blame those overactive sebaceous glands for producing that extra oil you see, but the good news is that women with oily skin tend to age more slowly. Avoid the temptation to over wash your face, as stripping it of all oils will only increase sebum (oil) production further. Washing twice a day is just right. Toner is a bit of a mystery to many, but for those with oily skin it can be a great additional step. End with a light, oil-free moisturizer, such as Olay Complete Lotion All Day Moisturizer (link to a specific product page), which will help nourish skin without clogging pores.

Dry skin

You don’t need us to tell you that dry skin needs moisture. As far as your skin routine goes, first wash with a gentle liquid cleanser. Then moisturize every morning and night – ideally within 20 minutes of cleansing your face as this is when your skin will be at its most absorbent. Look for a cream that contains moisture-locking ingredients – Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream Moisturizer (link to a specific product page) is a great option, as it helps regenerate the skin’s layers, making skin look instantly softer.

Combination Skin

Your skin is equally oily and dry – so how do you cater for both skin types at the same time? This is a very common skin type and products are developed with this conundrum in mind. Use a cleanser specifically designed for combination skin, as it will remove make-up and grime without drying out your face. Olay Daily Facials Deeply Clean 4-in-1 Water Activated Cleansing Cloths (link to a specific product page) are great, as they have the power of a scrub, toner, mask and cleanser in one, but the textured cloth is also soap-free and hydrating. Use an oil-free moisturizer afterwards to hydrate the dry bits without clogging up the oily patches.

Normal Skin

Not particularly oily, not especially dry and no real sensitivity issues – you have it fairly easy in the skincare department! Simply cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day. Try adding in an antioxidant rich serum at night before your moisturizer to keep your skin looking gloriously ‘normal’ for years to come. Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum (link to a specific product page) delivers moisturizing ingredients 10 layers deep into the skin’s surface and helps renew and plump the skin. Well, even normal skin could benefit from a little plumping from time to time.
