Shaving Tips For Body Parts

Shaving can be tricky business because very often, itrequires you to contort your body in unimaginable positions just to get rid of that pesky hidden hair patch. Whether it’s shaving your arms, underarms, or bikini area, the shaving technique will not be uniform across.

While certain techniques will remain the same – like using a sharp blade and moistening the hairy area, others will require you to employ a good amount of tact in order to achieve the closest shave, free of nicks, cuts, and burns. Hence, it is important that you treat each body part as a separate entity while shaving and don’t apply blanket techniques on all.

Here are tips on shaving your legs, underarms, and bikini area.

Legs

  1. Dip your legs in water for about 3 to 5 minutes and then proceed to coat them with a shaving gel. The Gillette Venus Satin Careshaving gelis a great pre-shave gel. Water helps the hair pop out more while the shaving gel helps retain the moisture, thus making the hair easier to cut.
  2. Use long strokes without applying too much pressure. When it comes to bony curvatures like your knees, shins, and ankles, exercise a little more patience and caution because the likelihood of bruising those areas is higher when compared to the fleshy parts.
  3. For your knees, bend them slightly to pull the skin taut before you shave – folded skin is riskier to shave
  4. The Gillette Venus razor, made to suit the contours of the female form, helps prevent nicks and cuts with three precision blades and a moisturising indicator strip. However, regardless of the efficiency of the razor blade, do not press down too hard when shaving – just let the blade glide gently over your skin and do its job.
  5. With your legs, shave in the direction of the grain. It’s okay to take your time when shaving over sensitive areas. That said, shaving against the grain allows for a closer shave.

Underarms

  1. Moisten the underarm patch and apply a good shaving gel/cream (like the Gillette Venus Satin Care gel).
  2. Raise your elbow above and behind your head as this will give you maximum stretch, making your underarm skin firm and taut.
  3. Shave upwards from the base to allow the razor to glide over the skin.
  4. Ideally, try to tug the hair out in one shave and avoid re-shaving the patch over and over since that could cause skin irritation (Remember – your underarm skin isone of the most sensitive parts of your body).
  6. Since underarm skin is sensitive, steer clear from deodorants, perfumes, or anything with alcohol in it for 24 hours post shavesince the chemicals present in them could cause a stinging, burning sensation. In case it is necessary for you to put a deodorant, it has to be in the form of a roll-on thatdoes not have any alcohol content init.

Bikini Area

  1. Wet the patch of pubic hair with warm water and apply a good amount of shaving gel. This step becomes particularly important for the bikini area since the hair down under tends to be thicker, denser, and curlier, thus making it more cumbersome to shave.
  2. Use a pair of scissors and try snipping the hair down to just a few centimetres. Long hair could clog your razor too soon and is more difficult to rinse off the blades.
  3. Handle the skin in the region very delicately since it is thin and tender. Aggressive shaving here could cause nicks and cuts very quickly.
  4. Unlike with your legs and underarms, shave your bikini area horizontally – from the outside to the inside of the upper thigh and groin area. Use smooth, even strokes and be patient and careful.
  5. Shave frequently round the year to prevent in-grown hair and to keep the area free from irritation and rashes.
  6. Allow your skin to breathe for a few days by wearing loose, cotton underwear that doesn’t cling to your pubic area.

Skin is most sensitive after a shaving session, so give it some time off by letting it rest for at least 30 minutes. Make it a practice to apply lotions and moisturisers soon after the shave to cool and soothe the skin, but avoid exfoliating moisturisers that might contain hydroxyl acids.
