Save Our Skin: 7 Pollution Preventing Skin Care Tips

From car exhaust to industrial gases to moody weather, if you live in the city, there’s no escaping pollution. Or is there?

In a study conducted in Asia, most women listed pollution as one of the five deadliest enemies of beauty, the other four being stress, sleep deprivation, UV exposure and dry weather. This comes as no surprise to any city dweller who’s washed her hands or face after a day out. But the problem of pollution is skin deep and far more damaging than we know.

Pollution particles are more than just surface stickies that are easily washed off with facewash. They are miniscule monsters that penetrate deep into your skin and disintegrate to generate free radicals that damage the sin’s protective barrier. This leads to loss of moisture, collagen breakdown, fine lines, brown spots – all those signs of aging you struggle so hard to prevent.

While we cannot stop growing older, we can definitely fight our way and protect ourselves from the effects of pollution on skin with this skin care regime.

  1. Cleanse, then cleanse again: Double cleansing is one of the secrets of good skin. Why twice? Because the first only removes surface makeup and grime. But the second digs deeper into the pores to drive out sebum, sweat and filth particles that have moved in. Using an oil-based cleanser is a better option as many pollutants are not water-soluble and only an oily substance can effectively remove pollutants. Follow this with a cleanser that’s recommended for your skin.
  2. Exfoliate for extra care: Light exfoliators with AHA peels are tough on pollutants but gentle with the skin’s protective natural barrier. This prevents your skin from drying or dulling.
  3. Up your antioxidants: Antioxidants are powerful anti-aging elements that block damage caused by free radicals. You can find them in most new age creams, serums and moisturisers but they work best when consumed as food. Rich sources of these are rainbow-coloured fruits and veggies, enriched citrus fruits, watermelon and apples, vitamin e-rich avocados, nuts and olive oil.
  4. Make water your best friend: Water helps flush out toxins and is great for the skin (skin is 64 per cent water, after all). By keeping yourself hydrated, you have a good chance of keeping your skin supple, glowing and camera-ready. You can even tank up on water-loaded fruits such as melons and oranges.
  5. Stay sunblocked: We all know what the sun’s UV rays can do to our skin and we definitely don’t want to be dealing with wrinkles ahead of our time. Need we say more?
  6. Moisturize with a mission: A moisturizer does more than hydrate your skin. It also creates a protective barrier between the pollutants and your skin.
  7. Mask it out: You can also come home to a soothing papaya face pack for glowing skin with ingredients found in your kitchen. Papaya contains “papain”, an enzyme which naturally exfoliates dead skin cells. It is also rich in vitamins, antioxidants and minerals which replenish skin cells and give it a natural glow.
