Don’t Stay In The Dark About Blackheads – Tips To Treat and Prevent

Your basic guide to knowing, finding and treating blackheads.

At any point of time, most of us have been victims to the occasional blackhead. Some of us experience it frequently. But what is a blackhead? How are blackheads formed? How to stop blackheads? These are questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis. Well, we’re here to answer these questions and show you how to prevent blackheads with the smallest changes in your beauty regime.

Firstly, blackheads are small bumps or blemishes that appear on your skin (usually your face) due to clogged hair follicles, excess oil, dead skin cells or bacteria. They derive their name from the surface of the bump, which looks dark.

To be more specific, a blackhead is formed when the opening of one of your hair follicles is clogged or plugged. Each of your follicles hosts one hair and a quantity of sebum, which keeps the skin soft. Dead skin cells and oil often clog up the opening of this follicle and produce a lump or a bump – scientifically known as a comedone. Now, if the skin over the bump stays sealed, it is known as a whitehead. However, when it stays open, exposure to air leads it to turn dark, causing a blackhead.

5 Main Causes of Blackheads:

  1. Your body produces too much oil.
  2. You have a large build-up of acne on your skin (propionibacterium acnes, to be specific)
  3. When your hair follicles are irritated due to a build-up of dead skin cells.
  4. Hormonal changes during your teenage years, or during menstruation
  5. Some studies believe that certain carbohydrate rich food and dairy products can increase your sugar levels, leading to blackheads.

However, the situation isn’t dire.

All you need are these Simple tips on how to prevent blackheads:

  • Cleanse Regularly:  This helps remove excess oil and dirt that can clog the follicles. Choose either a mild cleanser, or one that is rich with salicylic acid – which keeps the pores open.
  • No Bar Soap: They usually contain ingredients that clog the skin. Use mild face wash or face cleansers like Olay Natural White 7 IN ONE Foaming Cleanser
  • Don’t Over-wash Your Face: We know this might seem like a direct contradiction to the earlier rule, but it’s important not to overdo it. Over-washing can irritate your skin, leading to blackhead breakouts. Twice a day should be sufficient.
  • Remove Makeup: Let your skin breathe at night. Going to bed with your makeup on can lead to an oily build-up and plugged hair follicles. Use a gentle cleanser to wipe away the makeup.
  • Shower After Exercise: If you’re someone who likes to workout often or strenuously, shower after you’re done. Excess sweat can cause blackheads.
  • Apply Moisturiser:  Keeping your skin soft and moisturised can prevent blackheads. Keep in mind that the moisturiser you use should match your skin type (dry, oily, normal or a combination). Check out the range of soothing Olay moisturisers to keep your skin nourished and soft.
  • Exfoliate: One of the biggest causes of blackheads is the presence of dead skin. By gently exfoliating your skin, you are removing the dead cells and bacteria that cause blackheads. (do not use the exfoliator to try and remove a blackhead)
  • Avoid Touching Your Face: We know that the temptation to pick at, or attempt to remove a blackhead with your fingers is very strong. But using your fingers can transfer bacteria and oil to the skin, worsening the outbreak of blackheads.
  • Wear Loose Clothes: Tight clothing can lead to sweat and a build-up of bacteria. Avoid this by wearing loose clothes and breathable fabric like cotton.
  • Avoid Junk Food: It makes your skin oily and results in slow cell turnover. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and keep yourself hydrated.
  • Meet Your Dermatologist: If the outbreak is severe, meet your dermatologist for a consultation!
