Bikini Waxing: To Do or Not To Do

8 Things To Know About Bikini Waxing & Tips To Do It At Home

Ever wanted to get a bikini wax and weren’t too sure? Here’s the hot and the cold on all that you need to know.

Have you always wanted to try the bikini wax and experience the soft, smooth texture of skin afterwards, but have your reservations about it? We’ve put together answers for some of the more common fears and concerns around bikini waxing.

What is a bikini wax?

A bikini wax is the removal of pubic hair that is not normally covered by the swimsuit. For some it is a question of being presentable, and for some it is also for aesthetics or hygiene. Or for others, it might be a partner preference. Either way, countless number of women get a bikini wax regularly.

8 Essential Bikini Waxing Tips:

#1 Should my hair be very long?
If you’re in the habit of shaving, wait for the hair to be at least ¼ inches long before waxing. If there’s no hair to pull, waxing can’t do much. If it’s too long and you want to trim it beforehand, make sure you leave the length long enough for the wax to adhere to.

We hope you use a safe razor, like the Gillette Venus Original Razor, to clean up sensitive areas. However, it is essential that you know how to shave your bikini area before actually shaving it. It is a good idea to watch a video like the Dare to Bare video by Gillette Venus which gives you essential tips for shaving bikini area.

#2 I’ve heard there are several bikini wax looks.

There are quite a few options for you. You can do a simple bikini wax where only the hair from the sides is taken off. Or you can remove all the hair and leave just a small landing strip. Or you can have a little triangle left in the front. Tell your salon before you start so she knows what you want.

#3 Is it the right period?
Don’t go for a wax while you’re on your periods; it’s just messy. Also, don’t schedule an appointment at least 2/3 days before your period. Your skin is more sensitive then and prone to irritation.

#4 Can I have a bath before?
Yes please. Your salon will thank you for it. Be freshly washed and smelling nice before you bare it all.

#5 Will I really have to expose waist below?
Yes, you will have to bare it all. And we mean all. No pants and no panties either. Don’t worry. Your salon professional has done this a million times and is not going to judge you or make you self-conscious.

#6 Does it hurt?
Not as much as you’d think, but there will be some pain. Which is why we advise you to do your first few bikini waxes at a professional salon. There will come a day when you might want to and be able to do bikini waxing at home, but your first time isn’t the time to try.

#7 How can I soothe my skin?
Apply a hydrocortisone cream to soothe skin and reduce itchiness but only after consulting a doctor.

#8 Can I do a bikini wax at home?
Yes, you can. Here are some tips on how to do bikini waxing at home:
1. Exfoliate to bring hair to the surface.
2. Sit on the floor with your knees bent and raised, and push your legs slightly outwards.
3. Test the temperature of the wax on your forearm.
4. Stretch your skin and apply the wax in small strips.
5. Hold the skin tight, grip the free end of the wax strip and pull against the direction of hair growth.
6. Pull close to your body and don’t yank up.
7. Clean gently when done.

Finally, a few Dos and Don’ts:
