3 Natural Ways to Make Friends with the Sun

3 Natural Suncreen Lotion & Tips to Apply It Effectively

In our quest to keep the harmful rays of the sun away, we slatherourselves with sunscreen. This, of course, reduces the risk of skin cancer, but it also makes it difficult to get the much needed Vitamin D. Also, what about the harmful effects of synthetic sunscreens?

The sun is a giver. It gives us warmth. It gives us bright days. But it could also give us skin cancer. And that’s the reason people frantically slather on sunscreen before stepping out.Sunscreens block the harmful rays of the sun, but also stop us from getting the much-needed Vitamin D.

Has anyone given any thought to the long-term effects of the ingredients found in these commercially made sunscreens? In the rush to keep one disease away, are we ignoring the possibility of others?

Of course, we’re not suggesting that the alternative is to not use any sunscreen. Rather than liberally covering yourself with unknown products, how about your own homemade sunscreen? It’s quite easy to make and most ingredients are easily available.

  • Coconut oil – this contains natural SPF properties
  • Jojoba oil, sunflower oil, or sesame oil – easily absorbed and also provide natural sun protection
  • Vitamin E oil –moisturises skinand is a naturalpreservative
  • Shea butter – soothes and protects skin
  • Essential oils (eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, etc.) – can add a fragranceto the sunscreen
  • Zinc oxide (non-nano) – this non-toxic, non-irritating, broad-spectrum sunblock protects skin by scattering harmful UVA and UVB rays. Always use non-nano zinc oxide which cannot get absorbed by your skin.

How To Apply Sunscreen Correctly:

It is important that you know how to use sunscreen correctly.

  • Apply liberally to exposed skin.
  • Allow it to be completely absorbed into your skin.
  • Reapply every few hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

Of course, if you don’t wish to use a ready-made sunscreen and are too lazy to make any, just bea little smart about stepping out in the sun.

Firstly, try and not step out during peak sunny hours. If that’s unavoidable:

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Wear light, loose clothing with full-sleeves to cover exposed skin
  • Seek shade under a tree or an umbrella regularly when out in the sun.
