Departmental store shelves are filled with ready-to-wear lip balms – creamy, buttery products in multiple flavours. But you can never be sure what they put in those products, right?

How to Make Lip Balm at Home

Lip balm recipe #1: Coconut Rose Lip Balm
Allow delicious coconut and rose fragrance to come together in this natural lip balm recipe. Gentle on your lips and on your pocket too.

You will need:

  • 1/8 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax
  • 1/8 cup shea butter
  • 1 teaspoon coconut or vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup rose petals (fresh or dried)
  • 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil

Making the lip balm:

  1. Put all the contents in a small pan or a glass container.
  2. Heat on a low flame until everything melts. If you’re using a microwave, switch it on for 30 second intervals until it all melts.
  3. You can remove the petals or leave them in for a more natural look.
  4. Pour the mix in a small container or empty tubes (with a rotating base).
  5. Let the mixture cool for a few hours and your homemade tinted lip balm is ready.

Lip balm recipe #2: Petroleum jelly edible lip balm

Every house has petroleum jelly. Use it to create this edible lip balm of your favourite colour.

You will need:

  • 1 teaspoon petroleum jelly
  • Few drop of food colouring of your choice

Making the lip balm:

  1. Scoop out a spoonful of petroleum jelly and place it in a microwave bowl. You can add sunscreen for the SPF factor.
  2. Microwave the mixture at 30 second intervals until it is completely melted.
  3. Add the food colour. Food colouring is safe to digest which is why we are comfortable using it in a cosmetic product. Add more drop for more colour
  4. Mix the contents using a spoon until the colour is fully absorbed in the jelly.
  5. You can give it a 30 second dash in the microwave again for a flat look.
  6. Transfer the balm to a container of your choice and put in the refrigerator to cool and harden.

Lip balm recipe #3: Lipstick lip balm
The last in our diy tinted lip balm recipes involves raiding your lipstick stash. Look for an old one or one that’s not used so often, and give it a new lease of life.

You will need:

  • 1 teaspoon Olay Moisturizing Lotion
  • A lipstick of your choice
  • A little honey
  • Water

Making the lip balm:

  1. Pour a little water in a clean bowl.
  2. Spoon in the moisturizing lotion and let it mix a bit with the water.
  3. Pour the honey in as well. This is done to keep your lips soft and smooth.
  4. With a sharp knife cut off the tip of the lipstick and add it to the bowl.
  5. Using a fork stir things up until it forms a smooth paste.
  6. Add some more water if it is too thick.
  7. Microwave the mix for 30 seconds or more and pour it into a container.
  8. Refrigerate the balm so that it becomes solid and usable
