Baking soda is inexpensive and easy to find. Its powdery consistency makes it easily soluble. It is also loaded with antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a powerful remedy for specific skin issues.
Here are some baking soda benefits for skin:
1. Acne and Pimples
Pesky pimples and acne now have a tough fight! Baking soda’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties not only attack their root cause, but also help balance the skin’s pH which reduces the chance of future breakouts.
Make a thick paste of 1 teaspoon baking soda and a little water.Apply on the affected part and leave for 1 to 2 minutes.Rinse with cold water. Apply daily for 2 or 3 days then gradually reduce to once or twice a week.
2. Sunburn and Sunburn Blisters
The alkaline nature of baking soda provides soothing relief to sunburned skin, thereby reducing itching and burning sensations.It is also a mild antiseptic and has drying properties that help blisters caused by sunburn dry out quickly.
Mix 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda in cold water. Soak a clean cloth, wring, and apply on the affected area for 5-10 minutes. Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until you feel better.
3. Tan Removal
Indian skin unfortunately does not pair well with a tan. The worst part is the uneven skin tone it leaves behind, especially on the arms and feet.
Combine 1 teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of lemon juice and gently rub over the tanned areas. Repeat once or twice a week for best results.
4. Skin Whitening
Women who yearn for fair and even complexion will be surprised, and happy to learn that the secret lies in their kitchen. Baking soda is a good exfoliant and removes dead cells that dull the skin. Make a paste of 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda with regular water or rose water and apply on the face. After one minute, rub it off gently in circular motions using your fingertips. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry. Moisturize immediately. Do this once or twice a week. Make sure to moisturize your skin after using baking soda.
Alternatively, you can make a paste of 1 tablespoon each of baking soda and fresh lemon juice with 4-5 drops of extra virgin olive oil. Apply and leave for 5 minutes, then wash with cold water. Repeat 2 or 3 times a week.
5. Body odour
An effective natural deodorant, baking soda’s antibacterial properties neutralise the odour-creating bacteria and absorb sweat, thereby controlling body odour.
As a wet solution: Mix ? teaspoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of water. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Dab on your armpits with a cotton ball. You can also apply this to other areas of your body where you sweat profusely.
As a dusting powder: Mix equal amounts of baking soda and cornstarch and dust onto dry underarms and other areas prone to excessive sweating.
Before you apply any of these solutions, remember to do a patch test on a small part of your skin to see if your skin is sensitive. Baking soda treatments are effective only when used for short periods. Prolonged use can cause damage.
