Contouring Is Out. Strobing Is In.

6 Step Strobing Makeup Tutorial

Why do some women look luminous on Instagram compared to others who are equally made up? The answer lies in a simple, yet-to-be-discovered make-up technique called Strobing.

Contouring Is Out. Strobing Is In.

Strobing is the latest makeup trend that has celebrities across the world looking even more stunning. While the name is new, the technique isn’t, according to some celebrity makeup professionals. It is perfect for minimalists (or really lazy ones) and requires less artistry than contouring - you only need your fingers and a great highlighter!

Compared to contouring which leaves a matte finish, strobing delivers a luminous effect provided you use the right products.

What is strobing

While contouring relies on using a thick blend of darker and lighter shades to chisel your facial features, strobing uses highlighters to emphasise the parts of your face where light hits naturally i.e., the cheekbones, forehead, nose and chin. It makes your complexion look fresh and cherubic with the right amount of camera-ready oomph. The best part is it doesn’t make your face feel like it’s fire during summers as it uses only two products.

How to do strobing

Here is a simple strobing makeup tutorial which even an amateur can use.

  1. Prep up dull, dry skin with a good hydrating moisturiser. Be sure to use an oil-free option if your skin is naturally oily.
  2. Choose a highlighter shade that matches your skin tone. A cream or liquid illuminator works best as it glides and blends easily.
  3. Use your ring finger to apply; being the weakest, it’ll pick up the least amount and save you from looking like a shiny disco ball.
  4. Apply slowly and only on your cheekbones, temples, the bridge of your nose, below your brow bone, in the corners of your eyes, and above your cupid's bow.
  5. Blend it in using a brush, damp makeup sponge or your fingers to fade in with the rest of your skin.
  6. If your skin is oily skin, opt for matte products and only use a shimmery highlighter.

For strobing, or for that matter, any product to give your skin it’s glowing best, it is important to start with a skincare regime that takes care of the little signs of ageing such as dark spots, fine lines and pigmentation.
