Brush Up On How To Use & Clean Your Makeup Brushes!

Makeup brushes are often seen as tools of the beauty trade – usually used by professional artists. It’s easy to be intimidated by different types of makeup brushes or confused by what their separate uses are. However, we’re going to explain how to use makeup brushes and why they are essential to your beauty regimen.

Have you ever looked at the rows of shiny makeup brushes in stores and been completely intimidated? Did you ever wonder why you needed so many brushes? Why are they so expensive? What makes them different from each other? Well we’re here to answer all your questions by telling you how to use makeup brushes.

(Note: Before picking put the brushes you need, make sure you choose the material of your brush. Natural brushes – made of real hair – are great if you use blush and eye shadow. Synthetic brushes, on the other hand, are ideal for cream or liquid products like concealer or foundation. You can also go with a combination of both!)

Foundation Brush:

Your foundation is the base of your makeup, so this brush is vital. This round, synthetic, flat tipped brush is great for buffing and blending the foundation into your skin. Dip the brush into your foundation and move it in slow circles over your face. Start from your cheeks and blend it back towards your hairline.

Powder Brush:

An excellent alternative to a powder puff, this brush doesn’t absorb as much powder as the puff does. This soft, large and round brush will give you a natural and even finish. Make sure you tap off the excess powder before applying it on your face in light sweeping motions. Make sure you sweep the powder according to the shape and contours of your face.

The Bronzer / Blush Brush:

This one might be a mouthful to name, but is an important part of your makeup kit if you enjoy adding those tints of colour to your cheeks. This soft, medium sized, dome shaped brush has long bristles that don’t ruin your foundation or irritate your skin. Move this brush in upward sweeping motions, over the apple of your cheeks, towards your ear.

Ever wanted to try out eyeshadow? Then this is the brush for you! Small, flat and stiff, this brush works beautifully over your eyelid to give you a contoured look (more than a fluffer.)  Sweep the brush from the inside of your lid, all the way to the edge of the lid.

Eyeshadow Blending Brush:

Soft, flower shaped and made of natural hair, this brush is ideal for creating contours or shades on your eyelids. Due to its shape, this brush accommodates the creases in your eyelids and defines them with precision. All you need to do is dip the tip of your brush into the powder, tap off the excess eyeshadow and then using a “windscreen wiper” motion, move the brush back and forth from the outer edge of your eye.

Angled Eyeliner/ Brow Blush:

One of the most easy brushes to use, because of its angled design, you can use it to apply an even coat to the lines of your lashes or to fill in your brows. To fill in your liner, place the brush in the inner corner of your eye and move it slowly along the line of your lashes. Fill in your brows by using short powerful strokes over the shape of your brow.

Lip Brush:

Last, but certainly not least, this small, flat round tipped brush makes it easy to fill out your lips, without going outside the edges. Coat the brush with lipstick, then starting at the centre of your lip, blend the colour out till the edges. Use short and precise strokes to blend your lipstick and liner together.

Finally, let us tell you how to clean makeup brushes. You can buy a brush cleaner, spray it on a tissue and wipe your brushes with it. For deeper cleaning, wash your brushes with shampoo and warm water. Make sure they are lying flat when they dry, so that the water doesn’t seep down the brushes and damage them!
