5 DIY Nail Art Trends We Love with Photos

A roundup of the hottest nail looks you can do easily right at home!

Confession: I’m not a “girly” girl. I have only two dresses hanging in my closet and don’t even own a single skirt. My fashion comfort zone consists of jeans and a sweater or t-shirt in some shade of black, and I get a little grumpy when I have to leave said comfort zone. If I have to dress up, I’ll pull on a darker pair of jeans and a sassy black top. Right, I wear a lot of black.

My daughter, on the other hand, has much more feminine and colorful taste. She loves to wear dresses, and chooses skirts over leggings. Her dresser is full of prints, plaids, bright colors, and, yes, sequins.

You might think we have nothing in common when it comes to fashion, but we’ve found some shared style ground: We both love to do our nails. We have our weekly mani-pedi afternoon, when we plop on the couch, do our nails, and watch a movie. It’s a fun way to spend some quality time together, and add a pop of color to my typically monochromatic wardrobe. Thankfully for this mother-daughter duo, there are many cool but easy-to-do nail trends to try at home.

1. The Mixed-Up Mani
What do you do when you have a drawer full of nail polishes and can’t decide which one to choose? You don’t. One of my daughter’s favorite manicures is what she calls “The Rainbow,” where we paint each nail a different color. I usually just do the oh-so-hip “accent nail,” when one nail on each hand is in an alternate shade.

2. The Colorful French Mani
This double-color trend is totally easy and fun to do. Snag two colors you love, and paint the base color over the whole nail first. Let that fully dry, and then use the second color to highlight the top edge of your nail with a thin stripe. My daughter loves doing this with a yellow-and-pink combo while I prefer a navy base with a pop of a lighter blue.

3. The Barely There Mani
Sometimes, less is more, and the “bare nail” look is a trend that’s simple and practical. When I take a break from a bright color, I just do a clear polish or a very faint blush tone. It’s a nice option when I know I have a busy week ahead, as this barely there mani hides chips much better than darker hues.

4. The New Neutral Mani
The hottest color for nails right now is also one that can go with almost anything: gray. It has a similar neutral effect like the go-to classic beige, and you can choose among a wide variety of shades, from a light gray-blue, which my daughter loves, to a rich, warm taupe-gray.

5. The Metallic Mani
The fabulous part about this new metallic trend is it gives some rock ‘n’ roll mojo to both my casual, bordering-on-boring outfits and my daughter’s feminine style. She loves getting sparkly while I like the pop of texture it automatically adds to my look.
