3 Unexpected Braided Bridal Hairstyles to Look Stunning.

3 Braided Bridal Hairstyles to Look Stunning.

Buns and top knots, sleek or wavy, pinned up, tied up. There are only so many hairstyles that a bride can sport. How about braiding your hair? Not the traditional school-time plait, but something new, something more stunning and glamorous?

Your wedding is your day to shine and bask, and to bloom in the adulation of your family and friends. Your outfit, jewellery and makeup all play a role in creating the beautiful bride that you are.

How do you plan on keeping your hair? Natural? Wavy? Or straightened sleek? Buns, pinned, tied? Yawn. All done and tried by countless brides who walked these steps before you. Wouldn’t you love to be different?

How about trying out plaits instead? Wait, what! Plaits!

Did that bring to mind days of your childhood? Days of oil-slicked hair, tightly braided and tied up with bright ribbons? Days where you would have to face the ridicule of your classmates at school or the wrath of grandmother at home?

Relax. What we’re talking about is hair braids. Plait styles that are designed to make heads turn and have admiring glances come your way.

Go through these three braid styles for long hair as well as medium hair and choose the look you want to flaunt at your wedding.

Crown Braid

There is more than one type of crown braid. Depending on your willingness to experiment and to master, you can choose the simple one or the more complex. Here’s how you get the basic Crown Braid.

Learn to make Crown Braid:

  1. Part your hair neatly in the centre.
  2. Take a not-too-large section of hair from the right sideand divide it into three strands.
  3. Braid these strands together and secure with a rubber band.
  4. Repeat the same thing on the other side of your head.
  5. Take the braided section from each side and cross it over to the other side from the back of your head.
  6. Secure with pins.
  7. Your head has now been ‘crowned’ with a braid.
  8. You can leave the rest of the hair loose, pull it all together in a bun or style it in any other way you want.
  9. Highlight your hair with flowers or hair jewellery such as beaded pins.

At first sight, the French Braid might look complex but it really isn’t so. With a little practice you will soon master the style. After that your head is a playground and you can try out the many French braid hairstyles there are.

Learning to make French Braid:

  1. Separate a large section of hair from the centre of your head, from the top.
  2. Divide this into three strands.
  3. Take the left strand and cross it over the centre.
  4. Take the right strand and cross it over the new centre (the original left).
  5. Now take the new left strand over the centre, but also include new hair from the side.
  6. Take the new right strand over the centre, once again including new hair from the side.
  7. Continue with the above two steps until there is no more loose hair.
  8. Secure with a rubber band.
  9. Use beaded pins to keep shorter hair in place and use a medium-hold finishing spray.

Waterfall Braid

Now that you’ve learned (or are learning) how to make a French braid, you can move on to creating a waterfall braid. A waterfall braid is soft and wavy, and evokes a romantic feeling.

Learning the Waterfall Braid:

  1. Begin with curled hair.
  2. Separate a section of hair from one side and split it into three parts.
  3. Take the left strand over the centre strand.
  4. Take the right strand over the centre strand and leave it.
  5. Take the left strand over the centre strand again.
  6. Add new hair instead of the right strand and cross that over the centre part.
  7. Repeat all the steps from 2 to 6 until you reach the back of your head.
  8. Secure with a rubber band.
  9. Repeat the same steps on for the other side.
  10. Remove the rubber band and braid the two sides together.
  11. Secure the final braid with a rubber band.
