10 Ways to Get Gorgeous Coloured Hair, Naturally

Maybe you’re bored of your natural colour, or wish to cover the greys. Whatever the reason, hair colour is the only way to go. But all those harsh chemicals? Is there a homemade, all natural option?

Do you see yourself making too many trips to the salon for touching up or colouring your hair? Even if you use the safest and best brands, those are loaded with chemicals. Have you ever considered a natural hair colour?

There are several herbal hair dyes that can colour your hair and the most well-known natural hair dye is henna. Perfect for Indian skin, it has been used for centuries in our country.

Besides henna hair colour, there are many herbs and other natural substances that can be used to colour your hair at home, naturally.

How To Get Coloured Hair Naturally

1. Tea or Coffee for Dark Hair

You can make a paste or brew a strong concoction of tea or coffee. Apply the paste or squirt the cold and strained tea on to your hair. Cover with a damp towel and let it sit for half an hour. Do this in the bathroom as it can create quite a mess.

2. Henna for Dark or Brownish Hair

To prepare henna for colouring, take henna powder and make a thick paste. You can add essential oils, vinegar or even egg to add more nourishing power to henna.

3. Lemon Juice and Chamomile Tea to Lighten Hair

Mix one cup of freshly-squeezed lemon juice and three cups of strong chamomile tea. Soak your hair with this mixture and sit out in the sun before rinsing it out. Repeat this 3-4 times a week for best results.

4. Hibiscus or Rosehips for Red Hair

Boil a cup of Rosehips or 3 bags of Hibiscus tea in two cups of water. Cool and strain the mixture, and massage into your hair. Leave it in and repeat 2/3 times a week for gorgeous red colour.

6. Sage and Rosemary to Regain your Natural Colour

A strong concoction of sage and rosemary tea is all you need to banish those greys forever. Spray or massage into your hair daily, and leave it in. Give it a few weeks and you will see how well it works.

7. Beetroot and Carrot Juice for Red Hair

Mix equal parts of beet juice and carrot juice, and massage the blend into your hair. Cover your head with a shower cap and heat with a hairdryer for a few minutes.

8. Walnut Shells for Highlights

Walnut shells transfer colour easily. Perhaps, to your hair also? All you need to do is rub the shells where you want the colour. Yes, it's that easy.

9. Cinnamon, All Spice and Cloves for dark hair

Mix together 1 teaspoon of allspice, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon of cloves in a cup of water. Let it sit for a while. Strain and pour the solution over your hair. Rinse after half an hour.

10. Rosemary, Nettles and Sage for Dark Hair

Soak rosemary, nettles and sagein very hot water until it cools down. Strain the solution and spray it all over your hair. Let it stand for half an hour and then rinse.

Remember, even though the product is natural or herbal it won’t always suit your skin. Swab a bit of the natural hair dye mix on your inner lower arm and wait a day. If there’s any burning, itching or other reaction, don't use the mix.
